(CNN)When he felt authorities weren't doing enough to protect his hometown, he organized more than 100 women to police the streets.

When 43 students went missing in a controversial case that drew global attention to Mexico's struggles with violence and corruption, he led search parties trying to find them.

And when more families in his state came forward reporting that their loved ones had disappeared, he organized searches for them, too.

Saturday night, investigators in Mexico's Guerrero state say Miguel Ángel Jiménez Blanco was found dead inside a taxi he owned, with two gunshot wounds. Authorities haven't said whether there are any suspects in the slaying.

Jiménez was a vocal leader of citizen self-defense groups in Guerrero and a sharp critic of local officials, who he accused of hiding evidence tied to the students' disappearance.

Last week, Jiménez told CNNMexico that more than 100 bodies had been found in hidden graves in the area since October, decrying what he called a worsening security situation.

He said he'd recently started driving a taxi to make ends meet. After years of working to clean up the streets, he said he was once again worried about safety.

"We left it clean and now again there are bad people here, but we have to do something, because I cannot leave this to my children," he told CNNMexico. "If something happens to one of my children I will never forgive myself."

Leader of self-defense groups

As violence surged in Guerrero in 2013, Jiménez was among a number of local leaders who formed so-called community self-defense groups that aimed to take over security in areas where residents had long complained that the government wasn't doing enough to protect them.

In the town of Xaltianguis, located about 40 minutes from the violence-plagued Pacific resort city of Acapulco, Jiménez led a group of more than 100 women who took up weapons and began patrolling the streets.

A year later, he formed another group of community police in the same area, according to CNNMexico.

When 43 students disappeared after a night of violence in the town of Iguala, Jiménez and his group joined the search.

They also formed a new group known as "The other disappeared," looking into the cases of people who'd been reported missing since 2008, CNNMexico reported.

More than 10 months after 43 students went missing during a night of violence in Iguala, Mexico, remains of just one of them have been positively identified. Authorities have said the remains of all of the students were dumped into a river, but were so badly burned that it's impossible to identify the others.

Mexico's government has officially declared them dead.

And earlier this year, Mexico's President said it was time to turn the page on the controversial case.

But parents of the missing students have continued protests for months. Their search for their loved ones won't stop until they get answers from the government that they can believe, Melitón Ortega, whose son is among the missing, told CNNMexico last month.

"Even though politicians and authorities ask us to accept that our 43 students were killed," he said, "we will keep looking for them alive as long as what happened is not explained with irrefutable scientific proof."

The Staggering Death Toll of Mexico’s Drug War

Over the course of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the number of civilian deaths has been staggering. In Afghanistan, more than 26,000 civilians are estimated to have died since the war began in 2001. In Iraq, conservative tallies place the number of civilians killed at roughly 160,500 since the U.S. invasion in 2003. Others have put the total closer to 500,000.
But as U.S. involvement in each nation has dropped off in recent years, killings much closer to home, in Mexico, have steadily, if quietly, outpaced the number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.
Last week, the Mexican government released new data showing that between 2007 and 2014 — a period that accounts for some of the bloodiest years of the nation’s war against the drug cartels — more than 164,000 people were victims of homicide. Nearly 20,000 died last year alone, a substantial number, but still a decrease from the 27,000 killed at the peak of fighting in 2011.
Over the same seven-year period, slightly more than 103,000 died in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to data from the United Nations and the website Iraq Body Count.

To be sure, the homicides documented in Mexico cannot all be linked directly to the drug war, and distinguishing drug-war violence from the raw totals can be fraught with challenges. Many murders are never investigated, and the Mexican government has not issued annual figures on organized-crime-style homicides — those believed to be the work of cartels — since 2010. Even when it did, such data was often knocked for being untrustworthy.
Some counts have blamed the drug war for as much as 55 percent of all homicides. Others have put the estimate as low as 34 percent. Yet those figures have likewise been criticized as unreliable. For example, someone killed by a high-caliber or automatic firearm would be counted as a victim of organized crime, but if they were strangled or stabbed to death, they would not necessarily be considered a casualty of the drug war.
“In any of this data, a lot of dead people are not counted,” said Molly Molloy, a border  and Latin American specialist at New Mexico State University. Molloy has focused her research on counting the dead in Mexico, and in an interview with FRONTLINE said, “The violence engendered by the system as a whole in Mexico is so huge and affects so many people in various violent ways, I think you have to look at the murders as a whole, because how are you going to separate them?”
Whatever the true number, organized-crime-style killings continue to represent a substantial and lingering threat throughout Mexico. That danger was only underscored this month with the prison escape of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the drug kingpin known as “El Chapo” (Shorty) who is widely considered among the most responsible for the violence there.

What is humiliating to me is to watch as immigration advocates (as well as Washington's political illegal immigration profiteers) refuse to discuss greed as the root cause of illegal immigration and their respective existences.   

Who capitalizes upon millions of undocumented laborers working in the US workforce?  Who capitalizes upon billions of dollars in remittances being sent back home by the US undocumented?  Who capitalizes upon "free trade agreements' (NAFTA, CAFTA, and pending TPP) which create foreign poverty which in turns "deports" US jobs and "imports" more undocumented workers?

Who capitalizes upon the continued presence of the undocumented in America in order to continually make a living by defending or representing said undocumented?    

Who capitalizes upon billions of US tax dollars being pumped into crony US "border security" and privatized prisons whose profit margins depend upon continued illegal immigration and ineffective border and interior enforcement?

Who capitalizes upon "immigration reform" that ultimately pulls millions of more undocumented into the US and costs US tax payers billions more "border security" dollars?

Who capitalizes upon the one trillion dollar, continued failure of our 40+ year long war on drugs?

It is humiliating to me to watch as immigration advocates - as well as Washington's political illegal immigration profiteers - refuse to admit that their own negligence and greed will continue to cause the deaths of thousands more undocumented human beings who will die crossing the US/Mexican border.

Our broken immigration system is broken for everyone except the kleptocratic, immigration profiteers who run this country. And for those of you who think this is a Republication versus Democratic problem, congratulations! You are part of the problem, not a solution.

The scam of Illegal immigration is about maintaining a never ending supply of cheap laborers AND an ever-increasing supply of US tax dollars being poured into Washington's crony, "designed to be ineffective" border enforcement industry's pockets.

Think (if you still can) of Washington's 40+ year, one-trillion dollar, "failed" drug war.  The illegal products are different (drugs/people) but the game is the same.

Here we go again. 

Tell me why all of the "aye " and "naysayers" who debate Washington's immigration actions (or lack thereof) never consider that said immigration debate/actions - created and controlled by Washington's immigration narrative - fail to address the actual causes of illegal immigration?

Brainwashing?  American Exceptionalism?  Ignorance?  Laziness? 

The actual causes of illegal immigration are:  corporate demands for undocumented labor, corporate demands for billions of US tax dollars in immigration and drug enforcement "border security boodle", NAFTA's foreign government's demands for remittances and illegal drug profits, NAFTA and CAFTA exacerbated poverty and a forty year "drug war" that has been going on so long that many Americans are not even aware of it.

Use your heads for god sakes and figure out what is really going on, not what they tell you is going on!  Do you think Washington couldn't "seal the border" if it wanted to?  Do you think Washington really wants to?  Really?

If you study Washington's illegal immigration history and look beyond its political immigration narrative you will discover that Washington's decades-old immigration "give and take",  and give and take back are designed to maintain the illegal immigration status quo:  undocumented laborers crossing continually not only for corporate labor demands but to fill corporate owned immigration jails at enormous costs to and profits from US taxpayers.        

Do you really think that Washigton's immigration profiteers really care about undocumented families being torn apart?  Or about the effects undocumented immigration has had and will continue to have - upon Americans?   How about the thousands more undocumented who will die while crossing the border in the future?  How about the innocent people on both sides of the border whose lives will continue to be sacrificed as the nature of Washington's immigration, drug war and NAFTA beasts includes and even calls for their deaths?

The writing is on the (border) wall.
